Desert Wine, Chris McCarron up
A portrait of noted Thoroughbred, "Desert Wine", as he goes to the post for the Santa Anita Derby. It was a stormy afternoon that day, as evidence by the clouds gathering up against the Santa Monica Mountains in the background. Desert Wine won the Santa Anita Derby and went on to race in the Kentucky Derby, where he placed second to Sunny's Halo.

Swale, Laffit Pincay, Jr. up
This is a portrait of Kentucky Derby winner and Champion three-year-old racehorse, "Swale", as he goes to the post for what turned out to be his final race, the Belmont Stakes. A son of Champion racehorse and sire, Seattle Slew, Swale won the Belmont Stakes by a decisive margin. Tragedy struck eight days later when Swale collapsed and died after a morning workout, from what was believed to have been an irregular heartbeat.
